Olympics Day 15: Irish women’s 4x400m team pipped for podium place, as USA win men’s basketball gold (2024)

All eyes are on our women’s 4x400m runners tonight when they take the track in the Olympic final.

Rhasidat Adeleke’s decision to take part has added a huge boost with that race starting at around 8pm.

Key updates

USA secure gold in the men's basketball final for five straight gold win's at the Olympics! Steph Curry was a man on fire this evening and what a performance it was from the NBA superstar!

The Women's 1500m final is done and we have our podium finishers! It's the incredible Kenyan Faith Kipyegon who storms to the gold with a new Olympic record 3:51.29, Australia's Jessica Hull in second 3:52.56 and Georgia Bell from Great Britain in the bronze medal position 3:52.61

The result is just in from the final of the Men's 800m and it is the Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi who takes the gold! Marco Arop takes the silver medal after a brilliant run and Djamel Sedjati with the bronze. Wanyoni ran the race in 1.41.19 which is a PB for the Kenyan

The full time whistle has been blown in the Parc des Princes and USA win the women's soccer gold medal! A 57th minute Mallory Swanson goal was enough to see Emma Hayes and her squad see off Brazil by the narrowest of margins and take the gold medal for team USA for the first time since 2012!

She has two shots but only needs one! Lydia Ko from New Zealand takes the gold medal with a final score of -10. The 27 year old got a silver in Rio and a bronze in Tokyo and has now completed the set with gold in Paris. The win also secures the point she needed to be inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame. Very impressive at 27 years of age!

Stephanie Meadow signs off with a satisfactory -2 round of 70 to conclude Day Four of the Women's Olympic Golf tournament. She finishes on 6-over in total and currently set for 39th-place in the overall standings. The Team Ireland golfer from Jordanstown has shown steady improvement when you take the four-day event into context. An opening day round of 78 would drop to a round of 74 after Day Two. Her best round of par for 72 on Day Three showed and upturn in form, before bettering it today at two-under to finish her Olympic journey. The back nine proved to be a happy hunting place for the Antrim native, who started with a birdie on the eleventh and bogey on twelfth. However, two additional birdies on the par-5 fourteenth and par-4 seventeenth greatly improved her card. Lydia Ko of New Zealand continues to lead on 2-under thru 9 for the day, but -11 under in the overall standings. China's Yin Ruoning trails in second on -3 thru 11 (-7 overall) thus far.

Leona Maguire shoots a strong round of 71 on Day Four to finish on a high in the Women's Olympic Golf tournament. She ends her Olympic odyssey on 23-over in 59th-place on the leaderboard. It has been a difficult few days for the County Cavan golfer who opened her tournament with a first round 78, followed by a second round 79, and a dissappointing third round of 83 which left her well out of contention despite no fear of a cut in this event. Battling a flu over the last 72 hours, the 29-year-old from Ballyconnell can take some solace in shooting a one-under round of 71 on the final day and leave Paris and Le Golf National with her head held high as an Olympian. A pair of bogeys and birdies in the front nine preceded two further birdies on the twelfth and fourteenth holes respectively. A final bogey on the par-4 seventeenth presented the final blot on the copybook, but she ends the round on one-under. Switzerland's Morgane Metraux and Lydia Ko of New Zealand continue to lead on 9-under with both golfers set to tee off shortly.

France 70 - 80 USA

Wembenyama misses a free throw for France this time and their free throw conversion rate is really letting them down here. They would have been back to within three if they had converted their free throws in the last five minutes

France 68 - 74 USA

Brilliant rebound from France after Fournier's attempted three again and this quarter and match is going all the way!

Fournier hits an incredible three and amazingly right on the buzzer France are awarded another two points as Kevin Durant is penalised for goal tending. De Colo pulled off the steal for France but his effort against the run of play hit the backboard before Durant blocked the ball away. Goal tending and the lead is narrowed to six points.
