The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

THE PLAIN DEALER SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1997 HIGH SCHOOLS STATE WRESTLING NOTES CHUCK CROW PLAIN DEALER PHOTOGRAPHER Nate Daugherty of Walsh Jesuit celebrates his Division II semifinal upset victory over Ravenna's Jim Holmes. New dad splits time between mat, hospital FAIRBORN, Ohio In a rush. That's what Coventry assistant coach Doyle Baird was in yesterday. Following Thursday's preliminary round, Baird was called by an Akron hospital to see his wife, Jenna. He arrived at 3 a.m.

yesterday, in time to see the birth of his daughter. "I was so happy, but I also wanted to make sure I could see our kids wrestle in the morning quarterfinals," Baird said. "So I drove back just in time to see Jason McClanahan win his match and celebrate his birthday." Baird has one regret. "I still don't know the name of my daughter," he said. "I'll have to give Jenna a call after the ON CALL Streetsboro coach Will O'Donnell had more on his mind than making a run at the state team championship, even though all four of his wrestlers advanced to the semifinals.

O'Donnell's wife, Dawn, is pregnant and due to deliver at any time. O'Donnell said he was wearing a pager and was ready to make the trip north. ONE MORE PIN Walsh 152-pound senior Joe Heskett needs to pin Mark Becks of Lake Catholic in today's Division II finals to become the first Ohio wrestler to pin his way through three state tournaments. Heskett had four pins at state as a sophomore, and last year he became the second Ohio wrestler to pin his way through the sectional, district and state tournaments. He has three pins this week, including a 1:18 fall against Padua's Jim DeMarco in the semifinals.

NEARING HISTORY When Holy Name senior Ed Lynch lost to Austintown-Fitch senior Greg Faunda, 5-4, in last night's Division I 215-pound semifinal, Lynch remained a victory shy of 100. With a win in today's consolation match, Lynch (99-15) would be the first Green Wave wrestler to reach that milestone. SEASONED VETERAN BrecksvilleBroadview Heights 130-pound sophomore Josh MAdams might be making his state wrestling meet debut, but competing in state competition is not new to him. McAdams is a two-time state qualifier in cross country and placed sixth in the meter run at last season's state track and field championships. "Josh is a runner who wrestles," Bees coach Tom Mulhall said.

"At least that's what he always tells me." REVENGE IS SWEET Wadsworth's 125- pound sophomore Jeremy Paizs' 6-1 quarterfinal victory over West Carrollton's Tom Sommer was sweet revenge. Sommer eliminated Paizs in the first round of last year's state tournament. LONG WAIT OVER Shawn Marder's-15-5 semifinal victory over Ray Berry of Kenston ended a long wait for the Marders. Shawn's brother Dana Marder was a fourtime state qualifier for Twinsburg but never reached the finals. As a senior, Dana was the projected state champ, but he broke his elbow before the state meet and couldn't compete.

Dana was in the crowd last night for Shawn's victory. "I won this for me and my brother," Shawn said. "We waited a long time for this." HERE AND GONE After missing a state berth in 1995 and suffering an injury last year, Mentor 125-pound senior Rob Lentz was elated to make it to the state tournament. Unfortunately, he lost his first match, 4-3, and was eliminated. WHAT'S IN A NAME? This year's state wrestling tournament features' a number of familiar and unique names.
