    14:58 22 May

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

The Athletic's Jack Pitt-Brooke, speaking on BBC 5 Live Breakfast: "I'm sure [Gareth Southgate] will take one out of [Jarell] Quansah or [Jarrad] Branthwaite at centre-back, because they need an extra option. I would love to see Adam Wharton, I think he has been a joy to watch, such a natural in the Premier League. England do not have that many central midfielders.

"I think England will get to the last week - semi-final or final. France are really the only other team England should worry about."

    14:55 22 May

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Darragh Tuffy coached new England call-up Adam Wharton during his time in Blackburn's academy. He spoke to BBC 5 Live Breakfast this morning about Wharton.

"It's a fairy tale story for our academy, any academy's purpose is to get boys into the first team and hope they can progress. Adam has done that, he was with us from six years of age and is a big Blackburn fan. It doesn't get much better really

"He's an interesting case study, a late developer. Adam's physical traits did not come until he was 16, 17, but his ability to play forward passes, his vision, I'd love to tell you I taught him that but he had it when he came in the building. We always knew the talent he had, and it always stood out even when he was struggling in games against boys bigger than him. We knew as staff, when he hit his growth spurt we would have a top player on our hands."

  3. 'He could have been a rocket scientist'published at 14:52 22 May

    14:52 22 May

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Darragh Tuffy coached new England call-up Adam Wharton during his time with Blackburn's academy. He spoke to BBC 5 Live Breakfast this morning about Wharton.

"A very quiet lad growing up, quietly confident. Very bright, one of the brightest kids I've coached - his teachers said he could have been a rocket scientist if he hadn't been a footballer. In classroom sessions he could talk about football as well as any coach at 13, 14.

"I was working with him in the under-18s, his first year was underwhelming - he was undergoing a lot of growth, he had a lot of injuries. Then in his second year, all the stuff around his technical ability was coming to fruition. All the stuff we wanted him to do we could, and we thought, this kid is going to the next level. And the rest is history."

One of the headlines from yesterday's England squad was the inclusion of Adam Wharton. The Crystal Palace midfielder only made his Premier League debut in February, but a sensational few months saw him earn a spot in Gareth Southgate's selection.

His youth coach at Blackburn Rovers, Darragh Tuffy, was on BBC 5 Live this morning with some insight into England's newest midfield hope...

Don't understand people saying we were right to let Poch go. He always said he needed time and the second half of the season suggests he was starting to get it right. Now we're back to square one. De Zerbi would be an awful appointment and as for McKenna, if we're looking at managers who did well in the Championship then we might as well hire Kompany. The club is a joke.

Something we will see in the pre-tournament friendlies is Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield - Gareth Southgate likes that, it's an option he has looked to explore. It's a way of filling a midfield position while providing England with creativity, certainly crosses from the right.

There's 12 players in the squad aged 23 and under - it is not just a squad for this summer, it is a squad for five years in the future.

Whoever Southgate picked, there were always going to be these questions on the ones he didn't pick. I think he has picked incredibly well. Yes he is having to leave some behind, that is just the fact of the matter. I think this is his most attacking and positive squad that he has picked.

I'm in Gareth's corner, I think he has turned around the country when it comes to England in general. I think he has done incredibly well so far, the team is getting better and better. It's just that the last stop is top of the tree.

  8. 'Sancho's England bridges have been burned'published at 14:39 22 May

The reality of the 33-man squad is that there will be a lot of names discussed. It took until very late in the day for anyone to mention Jadon Sancho, who is probably going to be one of two English starters in the Champions League final. His bridges have seemingly been burned at an international level, for the time being.

The fact that we are not talking about him is because Southgate has picked a pretty sensible squad, and we have so many options in the attacking area that nobody will be missed. England will be able to bring on Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins - look at the numbers these players have produced this season, it's incredibly exciting.

Greg, Oxford: As Chelsea fans, we’ve been told to be patient with the club’s “project” and on manyoccasions this season that’s not been easy. Then just when the “project” seems to be showing some fruition, they do this. Our patience is running very thin with these owners.

Jules: Re 13:45. I second this comment Jez. Given what happened to Graham Potter in the not very distant past, he [Kieran McKenna] would be mad to go there. Hearing about Poch my gast was truly flabbered.

  12. James would have liked Sancho call-uppublished at 14:29 22 May

I have just been speaking to former England goalkeeper David James about Gareth Southgate’s provisional Euros squad at a ‘Uefa legends’ match in Dublin.

“Am I surprised? Yes and no,” he told me. “I was hoping Sancho’s football resurrection might have earned him an opportunity to get into the squad which it hasn’t. But at the same time Gareth won’t have picked a squad just based on individual talent but the cohesiveness of the group. I trust he’s got the right squad to do the best for England at the Euros.

“It’s never going to be my squad so there will always be players I might have had like Sancho - one of two English players in the Champions League final. You think it might earn you an opportunity. They’ll pick a squad best placed to try to win a tournament not just the best players playing their best football.

“Crystal Palace will be a surprise package next season. From the Liverpool game at Anfield, which ruined their title chances, going forward, we’ve seen consistency in their performances from all their players.

“Mateta has been scoring the goals but the team are playing very well. Whether they [Palace players] end up going to the finals we’ll see but Gareth has recognised they’re a team with good English players and it’s encouraging.”

Will: Livramento surely has to be a shout for England left-back. Played on the left several times this season for the Toon and looked solid.

Kieran Trippier's precautionary 36th minute substitution in Newcastle's post-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur highlights a fitness concern that may open the door for another Newcastle team-mate.

Former England defender Ashley Cole is confident the Three Lions can take the final step and win the European Championship this summer.

“I don’t see why not,” he told BBC Sport. “Of course there’s some very dangerous teams in there as well.

“On our day England can compete with everyone. They just try to translate that and get the momentum in the group stages and then kick on. Because they do have that record of not beating the bigger and better teams. That’s probably where we’ve fallen short.

“Is this a chance now to push it over the line? To win these tournaments you have to beat the best teams. We’ve fallen short. Hopefully this is our time.”
